Continuing with our time in Austin from Part I., on day 2, we escaped from the heat by taking a dip in the popular Barton Springs. The water was freezing, so it wasn’t easy getting in, despite the temperature being over a hundred degrees!
The bottom of the springs is very slippery, so it’s best to wear water shoes. We weren’t prepared with any, so we had to be extra cautious while in the water. Tons of other people were also there to escape the heat, and it was pretty crowded, but we still had great fun!
A few other places we enjoyed while in Austin were the mural walls, the Graffiti Park at Castle Hill, and the famed Salt Lick BBQ.
Although Salt Lick BBQ required a bit of a drive (about 30 minutes from downtown Austin), we loved the rural vibe of the vast property when we got there. While we were prepared for a long wait (based on online reviews), our wait turned out to be less than 30 minutes!
It’s BYO alcohol there, but no fret if you didn’t know, because there’s a store on the property that sells wine and beer. Overall, the meat was pretty good, but I think we still liked The Pit Room in Houston more.
After two days in Austin, we drove back to Houston and spent one final day there before flying back to San Francisco. I’m so glad that this experience boosted Mimi’s confidence in traveling with little Brady. He was such a trooper during all the long car rides! Maybe next year, we can drive across the country with him, haha! 🙂
