My Bucket List Destination: Santorini

Santorini has been on my personal bucket list for years. Clearly influenced by the endless array of beautiful photographs of the whitewashed landscape of Oia, I’ve dreamt of doing a vow renewal there with Alan. But, since Alan has not shared the same sentiments about this magical place, I decided to jump on an opportunity to take Bridgette there instead!

We started and ended our Greece trip in Athens, so I’ll blog about that last, but we did fly into Athens for our first couple of days before taking another flight to Santorini. We arrived to Santorini after dark, which was still beautiful all lit up. Since Santorini is one of those once-in-a-lifetime bucket list places, we splurged on the accommodations and stayed at the Katikies Kirini Suites and Spa. We stayed in one of their beautiful Junior Suite caves, with a veranda that overlooked the gorgeous Caldera sea.

We woke up before sunrise the first day, not because of jetlag, but because Taylor Swift was releasing her new album. I can’t think of a greater motivator for Bridge to give up her sleep, lol. Although I’m not a total Swiftie like her, I took the opportunity to watch a remarkable sunrise in Santorini!

The greatest benefit of walking around Oia so early was ofcourse the lack of crowds. In choosing our dates for Santorini, I had already made an effort to avoid the dates where multiple large cruise ships were porting on the island but still, crowds can form even with just one cruise ship. Being out and about being and during sunrise made my first impressions of Santorini even more magical, without anyone else around!

Our resort included breakfast each morning, and it was a feast not to be missed, so we made our way back after Bridgette finished listening to every song in the new album.

This was a truly relaxing stop for us. We didn’t have any agenda and really maximized that lovely veranda of ours during our few days on the island. We read, painted, journaled, and prayed on that veranda and we strolled around Oia in search of good food and gelato in the afternoons. There are some great restaurants by the water, but it’s a bit of a trek to get there, so we only went once. I’m proud to say that we never missed a sunset while we were there, and each one was simply magical in its own way.

I loved our time in Santorini. Even though over tourism is a problem on this popular island, we were able to avoid the crazy crowds by choosing dates that did not coincide with the porting of multiple cruise ships, and we chose to stay further away from the main town. I think it’s also worth splurging on a really nice resort there because you can enjoy the remarkable views that the island is known for in your own private space. We stayed 3 nights there and it felt perfect for us.
